What Are We Doing Wrong as Mothers? The Essential Lesson of Self-Care

Last week was a reminder of just how much we sacrifice for our families. I took the kids to the doctor because they weren't doing well, and I had to use one of my sick days. Before the weekend was over, I found myself battling a runny nose, watery eyes, persistent coughing, and a tension headache. Thankfully, my husband was safe from whatever virus was circulating, and he stepped up to take over the main household duties while I was on sick leave.

It’s all too familiar, isn’t it? As mothers, we instinctively jump in headfirst to protect our children, often putting their needs ahead of our own—even at the risk of our own health. On aeroplanes, they always tell you, “Fix your mask before assisting others.” Yet, as moms, we rarely take that advice to heart.

The Self-Sacrifice Trap

We’re wired to care for everyone else, to nurture and to protect. But in the process, we often neglect the most important person in our lives: ourselves. By trying to fix everyone else first, we end up breaking down and compromising our well-being. When I got sick, it hit me hard. I had no choice but to pause and face the reality that if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t effectively care for my kids or run my household. It’s a harsh truth, but it’s also a call to action.

A Lesson in Self-Care

This experience reminded me that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. We need to learn to follow the same advice given on airplanes: secure your own mask before helping others. By prioritizing our health, we not only recover faster but also become stronger, more present caregivers.

Here are a few simple self-care tips that I’m incorporating into my routine, even on my sick days:

  1. Take Your Medications and Supplements: Boost your immune system with a good multivitamin. I ran out of these multivitamins and did not take the time to reorder one of the few things that support my recovery and overall health.

  2. Document Your Journey: Use your self-care journal to track how you feel and what self-care practices work best for you. My Self-Care Journal is an excellent tool for reflecting on your experiences and planning for better days ahead.

  3. Lean on Your Support Network: When you’re unwell, it’s vital to let others help. This is where the strength of community comes in. I’m grateful for my husband’s support, and I encourage you to lean on your loved ones and even join supportive communities.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of yourself is the first step to taking care of everyone else. As mothers, If we don’t make our health and well-being a priority, we risk burning out and compromising the care we provide to our families. It’s time to start following the advice: fix your mask first. Prioritize your recovery, embrace self-care, and let your loved ones help carry the load.
