2023 is coming to an end and before you know it, we will be pulling out our planners and making New Year goals and resolutions. If you are like me, your plans for 2024 include some home improvement. The changes we make to our homes must be timely and timeless. This means, incorporating trendiness where possible and prioritising timelessness through design elements that will outlive trends and become staples. I pay attention to trends that will last a few years. You can recognize this through its ability to make a home more functional, appear more lived in and still look stylish. To help you kick your 2024 design plans off, I collated my top 5 trends for 2024 that I believe we will be seeing for a few years to come.
Minimal but not so Minimalist
Minimalism has been trending for a few years now and will still be trending in 2024, but not in the traditional sense. Ultra minimalism is definitely fading, this is characterized by sharp lines, neutral colours and minimal furniture (I always thought this design style was for childless and husbandless homes anyway). Instead, minimalism will be incorporated into other design styles to make a space feel uncluttered, clean and open. People are prioritizing their mental health and are more aware of how the state of their homes affects this. In 2024, we will continue to see a push for people to declutter and make their homes more organized. For some Jamaicans, this may mean removing some of those glass cups and chinas you haven't used in years. Finally, we can throw out those old sheet sets, clothes that we don't even wear at home, or shoes that are just collecting dust under the bed or in our closets. Minimalism is foreign to some Jamaican homes because we take care of our stuff and we are generally afraid to throw things out for fear we may not get a replacement. Trust me, decluttering and organizing will not only elevate your home, but it will also make you feel way better.
Colour

According to veranda.com, colour experts predict that people will be going for bolder colour choices for 2024 and I am in full agreement. Colour affects our mood and is a great way to add personality to your space. White will never be out of date, but you will find that warmer whites and pallets with, orange, red and even pink will be more dominant. Bold colours on the other side of the spectrum will also be incorporated in homes: with blues, greens, browns and even deep greys. Kitchens and bathrooms are the spaces to go big in and 2024 will see a lot of these spaces colourfully decked. Jamaicans are already colourful people so I know many of us will be embracing this design trend in 2024 and beyond.
Bringing the Indoors out and the Outdoors in

For 2024, more attention will be given to patios (or as we call them, verandahs), gardens and landscaping. Bring back the hammocks and swings because we are going back to lounging outside. If you want something more formal then opt for an outdoor set like this one on Amazon. Outdoor lighting will also be pivotal to those late nights under the stars. Bringing plants inside is always on trend and even more popular now are small potted trees. These add dimension to your space, and a plant's green hue never gets old. A herb garden on your kitchen window ledge or porch, and adding plants to your bathroom, are great ways to bring the outside in. Bringing nature into our living space will definitely be one of those timeless trends.
Wallpaper and tiles

Making statements with wallpaper and tiles is the way to go in 2024. These elements are another way we can add pops of colour and texture to our space. The most popular are wallpapers with murals and oversized porcelain tiles. Wallpaper tends to go in and out of trend but once you keep your selection neutral, it's likely to remain timeless. You can't go wrong with porcelain tiles. While they are more costly, they are more durable, require minimal maintenance and look great, so you will get your money's worth.
Trendy Storage

If you grew up with a mother (or grandmother) like mine, then you know how important tidying up is (my mother insisted that we leave the home tidy in the event we ended up getting sick while on the road and people had to bring us home). It is however difficult to do this without appropriate storage. the need to keep our clutter tucked away has seen an increase in storage solutions. There are too many to name but if you can think of a clutter-filled place in your home, then you can find a storage solution for it. Every room in the home requires some storage so investing in these solutions can easily make your space more neat and tidy.
