Going on the journey to make my "home for now" more beautiful has revealed so much about me. First off, I am surprising myself with the energy that I put into ensuring my space feels homely. If you know me, you know that I get interested in something new ever so often, but then I begin to lose interest after a while. But here I have been on this journey for almost a year now... ok, maybe that's a stretch, but I've been interested in this for a minute, and I have not once felt like easing up. I also realized that a nicer-looking space puts me in a better mood, and I feel so proud when my home improvement projects are successful. I also get to do some of the projects with my husband and trust me, it does wonders for a relationship when both are working towards a common goal. Finally, I know for a fact that whatever the mind conceives, you will achieve even greater because the outcome always exceeds my expectations. So, without further ado, here are five more easy and economical changes you can make to your space to give it an instant upgrade.

1. Add paint or wallpaper

Your space will go through a huge transformation with some paint. Whether you refresh the colour that's already there or change to a completely different colour, paint has the ability to instantly upgrade your home. If you do not wish to DIY and the cost of hiring is outside of your budget, then you can choose to do an accent wall in a complementary colour instead of an entire room. This will take less paint and will be easier for you to tackle on your own. Another way to add colour to your space is with wallpaper or contact paper. I used contact paper to transform my kitchen counter and cabinets completely. Contact paper or wallpaper comes especially handy when you are renting and you are unable to paint.

2. Change up or add small accessories

I spoke about small accessories like knobs in my previous post, but there are several other small and inexpensive accessories that we can change up to upgrade our space. These include cushions, throws, curtains, curtain rods, shower curtains, sheets, etc. These small things matter. These accessories are usually inexpensive and are great elements to add pops of colour, patterns, and texture to your space. These can also make your space feel more intimate or more luxurious depending on what you choose.

3. Fill wall space

Don't leave all your walls blank. Add art to walls that act as part of a vocal point, like behind a sofa or behind a bed. You don't have to break the bank either; you can DIY art pieces to cut costs or use family photos. You can also fill long empty walls with mirrors, especially if your space is small and does not have a lot of natural lighting. Mirrors tend to be a bit more on the pricier side, but they don't usually wear easily and can last for years once mounted correctly. Open shelves are also great for filling walls while providing additional surface space to display items.

4. Cover chords

Yes, having a clutter of chords lying around can make your home look and feel messy. But you can get rid of the mess with this simple solution. Use chord covers to attach the chords to the wall and camouflage them to look like the wall. Many covers come in white but can be painted to match the colour of the room. This will immediately lighten your space and make it look more organized. If you opt not to cover them, at least tie them together with a zip tie, and if possible, anchor them to the wall.

5. Make your home smell good

You have to think about all the senses when updating your home. What you see and feel is important, but what you smell is just as essential. Use essential oils to create a spray that you can use throughout your space or use scented plug-ins, air fresheners, and diffusers. You can also use scented candles when possible to add aroma. A good-smelling home will calm the nerves and make your home feel cleaner.

That's it! Now go ahead and try at least one of these tips to give your space an immediate upgrade today.
