When making any changes to your home, especially if you have small children, it's important to consider their safety and well-being. While I don't recall being particularly messy as a child, my three-year-old seems to have made it her specialty. Therefore, as I contemplate making improvements to our living space, I take into account the things that are less likely to cause harm and those that can prevent a mess. Here are five tips that may come in handy when decorating your home with kids.

5 tips for decorating with kids

1. Use hard-to-break decor items

In the past, children used to play outside and were taught to respect the fragile items in the house, such as china and glassware displayed in cabinets. Now they run in and around the house with little care for their safety or the mess they're making. While I love the look of ceramic and glass vases, I am concerned about the risk of injury for my toddler if they break. Therefore, I have opted to use acrylic or plastic vases that are less hazardous. In addition, I have chosen to decorate my house with wooden or metal items that can withstand repeated impact with the floor when my toddler inevitably crashes into them.

2. Make toys easily accessible

I have a tip that might seem counterintuitive, but it works wonders for me when it comes to cleaning up my daughter's toys. I bought a basket from Amazon and designated it as the spot where my daughter's toys should be kept. Whenever she's done playing, I simply ask her to put her toys back in the basket. This makes clean-up quick, easy, and stress-free. Previously, I used a foldable storage ottoman for this purpose, but I've since found other uses for it. There are plenty of affordable and attractive storage options out there for toys, so it's definitely worth considering.

3. Use furniture covers

Sofas and beds are areas where kids often spend time. Fortunately, there are numerous options available to protect these items. I invested in sofa covers, and I don't regret it. They can be easily removed and washed, and you can also use them to change the look of your space with different colors or textures. Mattress covers are a must-have for homes with toddlers who are still having trouble waking up to use the toilet. Parents with young kids know that this phase can sometimes last a long time, so investing in a cover is your best option for making your mattress last.

4. Create a space for them

It is essential to designate a specific area in your home where your child or children can hang out and play. If you have a limited space, you can create a play corner with a play mat, or if you have enough space, you can dedicate an entire room for that purpose. Having a designated space for kids is crucial as it teaches them about boundaries and helps to contain the mess they inevitably make. For toddlers and younger children, you can set up a kids' chair set, a play mat, or a playpen that can be easily folded and put away after each use.

5. Create a child-safe home

When decorating or renovating a home with kids, it's crucial to ensure their safety. There are several things to consider when creating a child-safe home, but in this article, we will focus on items that can enhance your home's beauty while keeping your child safe.

To prevent your child from slipping or tripping, use rug tape to keep rugs in place. Childproof barriers can help prevent kids from entering restricted areas, such as doors leading outside and stairways. Secure all items of furniture that could fall onto walls and move low furniture away from windows to prevent toddlers from climbing out.

Use childproof electrical covers and appropriate guards to protect fans. Consider using round-edge furniture to avoid harming kids if they hit them. Additionally, take the time to teach your children how to use household items correctly to prevent any harm to themselves or others.

When you have children, don't hesitate to invest in making your home beautiful. Just make sure that you plan everything with your kids in mind.
